Animals in Dreams, Part I

When an animal comes to you in a dream, what does it mean? Some people say they are spirit guides, some say they are symbols, some say an animal in a dream is, well, just an animal.

I have many animals in my dreams. I think that this is, at least in part, due to the fact that I absolutely love animals and I think of them often. When I encounter an animal in a dream, I often wonder what he or she is trying to tell me.

This is one of my favorite dream characters of all-time: The Indestructible Bird. I had this dream when I was going through a particularly difficult time in my life. I did not feel strong at the time, I felt very vulnerable and fearful. But, this bird was the bravest, coolest character ever - and I felt like it was, maybe (hopefully), a symbol of my resilience despite what was going on.

Sometimes, I get visits from animal-friends I know in real life. This is Cooter, a sweet Great Dane that hangs out at my local cafe:

Cooter is walking me, rather than the other way around. He's in charge. I'm not sure what he represents here, but I felt comforted to know he was taking the lead.

Animals aren't always brave, or sweet, or familiar. Sometimes they're just plain odd. This sea cucumber was extremely slippery and difficult to catch, but I finally got him:

He seemed to represent something I was trying very hard to get ahold of. Perhaps my creativity, since sometimes the muse is elusive. Again, it was a pleasant feeling.

Speaking of odd, I had a dream about evil angora rabbits. I LOVE angora rabbits, precisely because they are the antithesis of evil. But, not here:

I have NO CLUE what he meant in this dream. No freakin' clue. He looks kind of cute here but he scared the crap out of me in the dream. I'm thinking, he's like a wolf in sheep's clothing - something I took to be harmless but turned out to be harmful instead. Hmmm....

Do you ever have animals in your dreams? If so, what were they and what do you think they symbolized?
